3 Types of Twitter Accounts That You Should Follow

December 10, 2012 — 4 Comments

Do you film? Are you a musician? Maybe you’re a copy writer. The greatest thing about Twitter is that is has opened a great way to meet people from your own industry. And why stop there when we can go beyond our own niche?

Here are three types of accounts that you should follow regardless of your field:

Peers. People that share your same interests but are not an authority in your industry… yet. They are likely people you went to school with, or people you’ve met at conferences. Since everybody is online nowadays, don’t forget to be on the lookout for new peers with similar interests.  After all social networks are a great tool to connect you with others that you physically couldn’t otherwise.

Authority figures of your industry. For example I like following Disney Pixar because I want to become a better story teller and animator. I love making animations and films, and the films that Pixar puts out are just great inspiration to me. I would also like to become a better blogger, so I follow a couple of bloggers from who I can learn, like John Saddington and Jon Acuff. Check their blogs.

These authority figures are not my best friends. I don’t personally know them, but they are a good example of what I’m trying to be a: a better blogger and a better filmmaker.

The opposite of yourself. While the first type of accounts you should follow will mostly be like minded individuals, I assure you that it wouldn’t hurt you to follow somebody who is the opposite of yourself. Someone who thinks completely different than you. What does this person look like? Think about your religious beliefs, political views, economic status and then follow the opposite.

Here’s a thing I don’t recommend, since you might disagree with some of the things that they say, that doesn’t mean that you should get into a heated argument. Especially not through Twitter, that’s not the point. The point is that we learn and grow from reading tweets from whom we disagree with. You never know, you might learn a thing or two.

Think of one person who is in the same level as you, another one that you look up to and somebody that is the opposite of you. GO FOLLOW THEM. And then let me know in the comments how that helped to improve your Twitter stream. Or talk to me on Twitter @dannydelosreyes
